The Game Joins LAPD Police Chief for #StoptheViolence PSA Amid Controversy

As part of his ongoing mission to make the world a safer place, The Game has teamed up with the LAPD on a new PSA that aims to end violence among minority males.

Throughout the 48-second clip, The Game and LAPD Chief Charlie Beck provide some disheartening statistics on the city’s crime during 2015: “Last year in the city of Los Angeles, almost 1,000 people were shot. Almost 300 of them died,” Chief Beck says in the PSA. “80 percent of the victims and 80 percent of the shooters were young men of color.”

The Game goes on to ask the viewers to do their part in putting an end to the bloodshed: “We have stop killing one another. Stop the violence. Be the change.”

The video is the first in a series for the newly launched #StoptheViolence Campaign. According to the LAPD, other public figures will be featured in the upcoming PSAs and will share a message that underscores the importance of dialog and unity.

“Far too many of our young men are victims of senseless shootings at the hand of suspects who look just like them,” Beck said in a press release. “The time for change is here. The time to unify is now! Together we must stop the violence."

It’s an honorable and important effort, no doubt, but the new PSA will likely be met with backlash. According to L.A.’s KPCC radio station, Black Lives Matter activists have been calling for Beck’s resignation, and have also conducted sit-ins at City Hall East since July 12. BLM organizers have criticized the police chief for not doing enough to protect the city’s minority population.

Earlier this month, The Game and Beck worked together during an L.A. peace rally, which aimed to unite people of color and to announce that they would no longer let law enforcement “hunt” them. Following the rally, The Game and Snoop Dogg hosted a summit where the area’s gang members could discuss how they put an end to the violence.
