Though current country music star Darius Ruckerreportedly refuses to write a tell-all book detailing his Hootie & the Blowfish years until his son turns 18, that self-enacted rule didn't stop him from telling the story behind the Hootie reference delivered by Ma$e in the Notorious B.I.G.'s posthumous instaclassic "Mo Money Mo Problems."
During a recent interview on The Dan Patrick Show, Rucker finally removed the mystery surrounding the seemingly random reference. According to Rucker, the line is quite far from fiction indeed:
“We were at the Grammys, and some really hot girl walks by. One of his boys was like, ‘I’ll pay her,’ just as a joke. I go. ‘Man, I’m not paying for it.’ We laughed and then his next record, he’s got a line that goes. ‘Stay humble, stay low, blow like Hootie/True pimp n****s spend no dough on the booty.’ Great line.”
As for Hootie & the Blowfish, Rucker's detour through the wilderness of country music has rendered them nowhere near as active as they were during their days of selling 16 million copies of their debut album Cracked Rear View. However, everything is eternal on the internet:
