Like all historically evocative protest music, N.W.A.'s iconic 1988 single "Fuck tha Police" has only grown in relevance in the decades since its release. In the wake of renewed focus on the troubling prevalence of police brutality and racially charged policing tactics across the country, "Fuck tha Police" strikes a nostalgia-free chord of emotional frustration — nearly a startling thirty years after the release of Straight Outta Compton.

On Saturday, Ice Cube reunited with fellow N.W.A. members MC Ren and DJ Yella during the BET Experience in Los Angeles. The trio — sans, predictably, Dr. Dre — kicked through a particularly rousing performance of "Fuck tha Police," strongly heightened by the inclusion of recent images of disheartening police violence and the powerful protests of such violence that captivated the country.

The much-discussed N.W.A. biopic Straight Outta Compton — starring Jason Mitchell as Eazy-E, Corey Hawkins as Dr. Dre, O'Shea Jackson, Jr. (Cube's son) as Ice Cube, Aldis Hodge as MC Ren, and Neil Brown, Jr. as DJ Yella — opens on August 14.

R.I.P. Eazy-E.
