Last year, right before the release of his fifth album, Panda Bear (a.k.a. Animal Collective co-founder Noah Lennox) told Rolling Stone how the project had been influenced by some of his favorite hip-hop producers. "I used the drum breaks that were also commonplace in a lot of Nineties hip-hop production," he said of the album, Panda Bear Meets the Grim Reaper. "Stuff like the Dust Brothers, Q-Tip and A Tribe Called Quest productions,Pete Rock, DJ Premier, 9th Wonder andJay Dee were important to me," he later added.
Now, Lennox is set to release a five-track remix EP next week via Domino Records (June 29) and he got one of those idols to lace a song called "Crosswords." Without disrupting too much of the source material, Pete Rock remodels the original version's breezy vibe into the type of break-driven number Lennox cites as an influence.
