The group urges the masses to unite on this new release.

Though De La Soul's new single, "The People," featuring Chuck D was originally set to be released back in June, the timing of the powerful record seems to be better fitted for today. Over the horn-heavy production, De La Soul looks right in the direction of our societies indifferences, preaching that unity is needed rather than bringing each other down.

With the recent unrest in Ferguson, Missouri following the Grand Jury's decision not to indict Darren Wilson in the killing of teenager Michael Brown, this record seems even more relevant than it was even intended to be.

“Originally ‘The People’ was supposed to drop in June, around the same time the Chuck D/Hot 97/Rosenberg situation took place. We chose to hold off and not add fuel to any fires,” Trugoy says. “Our next aim was for a Black Friday release. Coincidentally, the Ferguson tragedy took place and now the non-indictment verdict. Somehow this song was destined to be a part of something more than just dropping a joint. We hope it will lend itself to something positive in these difficult times.”

De La Soul has already had a solid year in 2014, with the release of their project, Smell the Da.I.S.Y., and they will be looking to build on that even more in 2015, as they near towards their new album. Stream the powerful new track below.
