After a listen to RP Hooks' music you would have a difficult time pinpointing exactly where he calls home. That's by design. The 26-year-old rapper and producer left his hometown of Chicago and relocated to Minneapolis around the age of 10. Sure, both cities are located in what is known as the Midwest, but sonically the two are worlds apart. That said, that's not even reason Hooks' music sounds like a mash-up of many influences from the left and right coasts of the country. Let him tell it, his debut project, 340am, is what the love child of A$AP Rocky’s LongLiveA$AP and Ab-Soul’s Control System would sound like. And, for the most part, he's right. 340am, features a myriad of flows locked within haunting, frenetic production.

Despite learning to produce only a year ago, most of the production on 340am is handled by Hooks himself. "Cloud 100," one of the projects standout tracks was the first beat he ever produced. Elsewhere, Amati and Ninety, who Hooks credits as the one who taught him how to produce, handle the rest. For his first solo project, the album feels solid and surefooted, but HOOKS says this is just an introduction.

"It was really like a test to prove that I could do this shit," he says. "Now I know the direction I want to go."
