With plans squarely fixated on turning up on the zeitgeist for a third straight year, the organizers of 2014's Trillectro Festival this Saturday in Washington, DC have released the official mixtape for what has become the American summer's must-attend rap-meets-EDM event. This year's festival is headlined by Big Sean and Baauer, and somewhere in the idea of "Ass"es doing the "Harlem Shake," this mixtape truly nails the vise-like grip that 808s have on dance and rap in mainstream and underground pop. It's an all-Trillectro affair here as festival organizer DJ Spicoli joins with rising DC-area emcee (and Trillectro performer) GoldLink's DJ Kidd Marvel on the mixing duties of acts scheduled to grace the stages on Saturday afternoon. Tracks like "Bricks"—the Migos collaboration with trap (and Chipotle) lord Carnage—feel particularly "Trill" with a capital T as Carnage headlined the 2013 event, and one of the hotly anticipated moments of the forthcoming 2014 edition of Trillectro will be Migos manic rap energy graving the festival's main stage. Buoyed by remixes from the likes of Hoodboi and Willy Joy and original tracks by Sango, this mix is intriguing as a festival-related product in that in the rap and EDM being so strikingly similar in production that Trillectro's intended goal in closing the seams between these "divergent" cultures has finally occurred.
