Music is everything to Meka Udoh. He is the co-founder of the esteemed hip-hop site 2DopeBoyz, in addition to being a well-respected DJ. “I’ve always been infatuated with the music world,” he says, “as far back as I can remember.”

From the time he acquired his first favorite album, MC Hammer’s Please Hammer, Don’t Hurt 'Em, Meka has also been obsessed with preserving his music collection. (To be fair, he wound up having to buy a new cassette of PHDHE, as he played the first one so much he wore it out.) And even though he doesn’t acquire too many “physicals” (i.e. CDs, vinyl, or cassettes) anymore, opting instead for the ever easier digital platforms, that dedication to preservation still remains. “I have three backups of each thing I own,” he says. This means he has the main hard drive that he uses, and then three separate drives—yes, three—serving as backups.

This may sound paranoid to you, but Meka once had the unfortunate experience of losing all of his primary files and his sole backup, and it made him so distraught he vowed to never endure that misery again. "” just don’t do that anymore,” he says; backing up repeatedly is “definitely a lifesaver. ...Music is not only my job, it’s my life. So, why...would I not protect something I cherish as much as my life?”

Fair point.
