Are you planning on going in a river, lake, or ocean this summer? Then do yourself a favor and do not watch the video above. Or do and spend the next three months having nightmares about what’ll happen if you so much as dip a toe into the water.
The clip above shows the decomposing body of a mysterious sea creature that washed up on shore in Indonesia recently. It was initially identified as a giant squid by the Indonesian Army, but upon further review, it appears as though the big blob is actually a badly decomposed whale. One astute YouTube user posted video of the creature and pointed out that the large white bones sticking out of it were not tusks as some people originally believed, but rather, the jawbone of the whale covered in decomposing skin. Lovely!
Vicedid some more digging around and sent a photo of the creature to the Zoological Society of London, and someone there identified it as a baleen whale. They noted that the creature appears to have a backbone, which rules out the possibility of it being a giant squid. And they also pointed out several other distinguishing features that led them to believe that it’s a whale and not some unidentified monster from the depths of the sea.
But whatever it is, it’s fucking terrifying, and it doesn’t look like something that you’d want to be swimming around with, does it? You can get a closer at it in the clips above if you want to ruin your entire summer.
