The Sydney Morning Herald went to print this morning without noticing a glaring typo on the front page.

As hundreds of journalists in Fairfax stage a week-long strike, The Sydney Morning Herald have made an embarrassing error on the front page of today’s paper – and it’s pretty damn bad. The title was supposed to refer to household debt posing a threat to our economy, instead, SMH wrote the “ecomomy”. It reflects the struggle that is expected to continue for the media group, as they attempt to produce the same journalistic content with approximately 100% less journalists.

Fairfax announced the axing of 125 fulltime positions this Wednesday, or a quarter of their editorial staff as part of a $30 million restructuring of the company. Journalists from both The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald have motioned to strike for seven days in response to the cuts. Now, without journalists, Fairfax media are starting to realise how valuable these positions are as they struggle to eliminate year 7 grammar mistakes in their much smaller firm.

The mistake is so basic that some have speculated the grammar error was deliberately placed by staff to protest the decision of management.
