Two people contacted authorities after they found a dead bat inside the "Organic Marketside Spring Mix" bag of salad purchased at a Walmart in Florida.
In a report by The Guardian, the discovery led to an investigation conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to see if the animal had rabies. The CDC is also working alongside the Florida department of heath and the federal Food and Drug Administration to find out how the hell a dead bat got inside a packaged salad.
Even though the CDC claims that it is "extremely uncommon" for these individuals to have contracted any illness from the decayed bat, the agency is exercising extreme caution and looking into the matter. Fresh Express, the packaged salad brand which contained the bat, have issued a recall of their product sold in the southeastern part of the United States with a best-used date of April 14 and the production code G089B19. The company also released a statement stressing that they take "matters of food safety very seriously and rigorously complies with all food safety regulation."
The CDC implores customers who ate the packaged salad in question but didn't consume any "animal material” to reach out to Fresh Express to demand a full refund. The agency also used this incident to advise “anyone who ate the recalled salad product and found animal material in it [should] contact their health department for evaluation.”
