Donald Trump’s Jan. 20th inauguration in Washington, D.C. is going to be mega-lit. In one of many protests scheduled for the day, the DC Cannabis Coalition will hand out thousands of free joints in a grassroots effort to promote the federal legalization of marijuana, The Huffington Post reports.
According to Adam Eidinger, the founder of DC Marijuana Justice, the giveaway is totally legal in D.C. after smoking weed recreationally was legalized 2015. Once the planned 4,200 joints are distributed, the group will march to the National Mall and spark up when Trump’s inaugural speech hits the four-minute and 20-second mark.
And, while distributing marijuana for consumption in the privacy of one’s home is totally kosher in the nation's capital, lighting up in public is not, which Eidinger wants protestors to be fully aware of.
"We are going to tell them that if they smoke on federal property, they are risking arrest. But, that's a form of civil disobedience,” he told CBS affiliate WUSA 9. "I think it's a good protest. If someone wants to do it, they are risking arrest, but it's a protest and you know what, the National Mall is a place for protest.”
Eidenger added that the protest is especially vital with Jeff Sessions set to become attorney general after Trump is sworn in. The Alabama senator has made no secret about his disdain for marijuana, and once joked that he thought the KKK was OK until he “found out they smoked pot.”
“We are looking at a guy who as recently as April said that they are going to enforce federal law on marijuana all over the country,” Eidinger added. “He said marijuana is dangerous.”
If you do plan on joining Bill and Hillary Clinton in Washington D.C. for Trump’s big day, and you feel like getting your smoke on, the group will meet on the west side of Dupont Circle between 8-10 a.m. And, if the legalization of marijuana isn’t a cause that’s near and dear to your heart, at least getting baked will be a surefire way of enjoying the day’s, um, entertainment.
