'Hollyweed' is certainly one way to ring in the New Year.

While the rest of us spent our New Years Eve sipping champagne and watching Mariah Carey melt down on national television, a mysterious prankster decided to ring in 2017 by vandalizing the Hollywood Sign, TMZ reports. Tinseltown’s iconic hilltop signature now reads “Hollyweed,” in what can only be interpreted as a bold homage to a new California law that decriminalizes the recreational use of marijuana.

According to CBS Los Angeles, police are using surveillance footage to investigate the incident, which they’re treating as misdemeanor trespassing. And, though the guilty party may face criminal charges if and when apprehended, they’ve already become a folk hero on Twitter.

I guess if you're going to vandalize an iconic American landmark like the Hollywood sign, "Hollyweed" would be the way to do it...

I will only refer to Hollywood as hollyweed now

No one has claimed responsibility for the stunt as of yet, but based on the reactions above, it's only a matter of time before someone takes credit for getting 2017 off to a blazing start.
