Two Boston police officers are reportedly in "extremely critical" condition after being shot by a man armed with an assault rifle while responding to a domestic disturbance report on Wednesday night. The gunman, who was allegedly wearing body armor at the time of the attack, was shot and killed by police a short time later.

According to Boston Police Commissioner Williams Evans, two police officers responded to a reported dispute between two roommates inside of an apartment on the east side of Boston just before 11 p.m. When they arrived, a man opened fire on them from the apartment and wounded both officers. It prompted a large police response and reportedly led to a brief shootout between the gunman and responding police officers. The gunman was killed during that exchange.

During a press conference held at approximately 2 a.m. on Thursday, Evans revealed that the two officers who were shot were transported to Massachusetts General Hospital, where they were both expected to undergo surgery. At least nine other police officers were also treated for minor injuries sustained while exchanging fire with the gunman. Evans asked for prayers for the officers hurt in the attack.

Police have not yet identified the suspect in the shooting. Evans also declined to reveal the identities of the two police officers who were shot, but he did say that one has been on the Boston Police force for 28 years while the other has been a Boston police officer for about 12 years. He commended the police officers who responded to the scene.

"I commend the officers," Evans said. "They moved in and neutralized the threat pretty quick so that no one else got killed."

The Boston district attorney’s office has announced that an investigation into the shooting is underway since deadly force was used.
