A 39-year-old Pennsylvania man managed to crawl from the wreckage of an accident that claimed the life of his girlfriend three days after the crash, according to The Washington Post.
Kevin Bell reportedly lost control of the 1999 Ford Explorer he was driving on U.S. Route 50 in rural Indiana while traveling from Pennsylvania to Indiana. It caused the vehicle to dive down a steep embankment and collide head-on into a tree, killing Bell's 37-year-old girlfriend Nikki Reed instantly. Bell then spent three days trapped in the SUV with his dead girlfriend before he managed to escape and crawl nearly 100 feet up the side of a bluff to reach the highway despite suffering a serious leg injury in the accident.
A spokesman for the Indiana State Police told the Washington Post that "nothing" he's ever dealt with before has ever been like this. "Stories pop up occasionally where someone crashes and aren’t found for a while," the spokesman said. "It’s very rare, obviously.”
The couple was reportedly driving to attend a birthday party for Reed's son, according to a Facebook post written by one of Reed's three children. The post also noted that the family lost contact with Reed on Sept. 17.
"I have called her multiple times on her cell and Facebook messenger. I've also texted her multiple times. I haven't had any response from her at all since the last time I video called her," the post reads. "Everyone is worried sick about her including me, my two younger brothers, and my dad."
A YouCaring page for the cost of Reed's funeral expenses has raised more than $2,000.
"Unfortunately, my mom didn't make the crash. She died instantly. I don't know what happened or how it happened. All I know is that I want this to not be true, I just wish it was a dream!" Reed's daughter Brooklyn wrote on the page.
Bell is expected to recover from the injuries he sustained in the accident. Police continue to investigate the crash.
