Tragedy struck Kalamazoo, Michigan earlier this week when two 17-year-olds were found in an alley with gunshot wounds. The deaths are likely the result of an accident and a suicide.

According to Fox 17, a witness saw Marsavious Frazier and Daqarion Hunter, both 17, "playing with" a gun. Somehow the gun went off, accidentally killing one of the teens. The other teen, overcome with distress, then used the gun to take his own life.

Captain Victor Ledbetter of the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety said: "The young man thought there was no way out. He felt responsible for taking his friend’s life. In that moment of despair, [he] took his own life, so it’s very very tragic and very unfortunate."

The police didn't identify which teen had used the gun.

The witness said the teens, known as "Savi" and "DQ" by their friends, knew each other well. He told police there wasn't any beef before the shooting, and the friends weren't "trespassing or involved in any other unruly activity," according to MLive.com.

Ledbetter noted that the witness knew the victims well: "He witnessed two of his friends die, he actually held one of them, so this young man is going to need some prayers and some counseling." He added, if "not for the gun, it would have been a regular, typical, holiday weekend with three friends hanging out."

The Kalamazoo DPS said that the gun used in the situation "was not stolen, but it was also not properly registered." Because of that, according to local TV station WOOD-TV, police aren't sure where the teens got the gun. Their statement emphasized that people should "be mindful and serious about the proper and legal handling of firearms."

Marsavious' father, Jonathan Frazier, told WOOD-TV: "We’re devastated. We’re sick as hell. My baby, man, he’s gone. I don’t know what else to do."
