It's not just Nipsey Hussle and YG who can't stand Donald Trump. Some of the most conservative editorial boards in the country are rejecting the Republican candidate too.
In a two-part recommendation, The Dallas Morning News first brutally dissed Trump and then, in the second part, endorsed Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton.
While rejecting someone as atrocious as Donald Trump might not seem like a big deal, it's a historic move for The Dallas Morning News. (Disclosure: the author has previously written for DMN.)
The last time the DMN didn't endorse the Republican candidate was 1964, when they remained neutral in the race between Lyndon B. Johnson and Barry Goldwater. Furthermore, they noted the "newspaper has not recommended a Democrat for the nation's highest office since before World War II — if you're counting, that's more than 75 years and nearly 20 elections."
Despite the history, it doesn't appear the DMN had too much trouble this time around, considering the very opening of their recommendation editorial: "There is only one serious candidate on the presidential ballot in November. We recommend Hillary Clinton."
Acknowledging that they've had issues with Clinton in the past, they point that, "unlike Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton has experience in actual governance, a record of service and a willingness to delve into real policy." They continue, "Resume vs. resume, judgment vs. judgment, this election is no contest."
Appealing to their readers, who are generally more conservative, they wrote in the first editorial that "Donald Trump is no Republican and certainly no conservative." After noting specific issues with Trump, they conclude: "We have no interest in a Republican nominee for whom all principles are negotiable, nor in a Republican Party that is willing to trade away principle for pursuit of electoral victory. Trump doesn't reflect Republican ideals of the past; we are certain he shouldn't reflect the GOP of the future."
The recommendation comes at a time when the solidly-red Texas could possibly turn purple. As Vox put it, "The endorsement is a sign of how much Trump’s campaign has shaken even staunch bastions of Republicanism."
While many across the country appreciate the DMN's stance, other readers aren't so happy, as documented by DMN editor Mike Wilson:
It's not clear yet how much, if at all, the endorsement will sway voters, especially in conservative Texas. But the stance alone is worthy of praise.
