While Jimmy Fallon was busy gently patting GOP nominee Donald Trump on the head for NBC, Trevor Noah had everyone's favorite vegan balloon-lover Bill Clinton on his show for a thorough discussion about what exactly is at stake this November. Clinton had plenty to say about the Trump campaign's parallels with the disastrous Brexit vote, Hillary Clinton's overblown pneumonia story, and, yes, balloons.
"[Hillary] just called and said she got home and still feels good," Clinton told Noah on Thursday's show. "Big deal. She had pneumonia! People get it all the time." According to Bill, Hillary had just been dehydrated after a marathon of work commitments. "I didn't worry too much about it," Clinton added.
Comparing the movement behind Trump to the rhetoric that inspired the Brexit vote in the U.K. earlier this year, Clinton said Americans are still progressive at their core but risk "blowing it" with this election. "Most of [Trump's] strongest supporters are 'I'm against this administration, I just want something new, I don't like all these changes, I wanna come inside and close the door,'" Clinton explained. "And I get that. There are a lot of people who feel economically or culturally dispossessed. They wanna just come in and close the door. That's the Brexit vote."
Clinton's Brexit comparison echoes similar comments from President Barack Obama in June. "There's a xenophobia and anti-immigrant sentiment that's flashing up not just in Great Britain but throughout Europe," Obama toldNPR's Steve Inskeep. "That has some parallels to what Mr. Trump is trying to stir up here."
Clinton and Trump will next face off on Sept. 26 during a televised debate from Hofstra University in New York.
