A server who served former President George W. Bush and former First Lady Laura Bush was having a good day when she got a good tip from the reportedly nice couple. That went south when the server tweeted a photo with the former First Couple accompanied with a "sarcastic" caption that blamed the former president for 9/11, which no one thought was funny.
Leisa Smith was the server who tweeted the photo (seen above) after serving the couple at an unidentified restaurant, reports the New York Daily News. According to the New York Daily News, Smith got a $40 tip on a $21.47 bill.
Her tweet soon went viral, not for the kind "solid" but because of Smith's 9/11 "joke." Three days after the original tweet she cleared the air explaining she doesn't actually think Bush was responsible for 9/11. She would later post a lengthier explanation about the controversial tweet. Smith tweeted it was meant to be a "sarcastic joke." "I didn't mean to make fun of 9/11 or the people involved, I was only trying to mock the people that really believe the conspiracy," Smith tweeted. "President George W. Bush and his wife were the nicest people I have ever met and had I known the tweet would blow out of proportion like this I would have never tweeted it."
Conspiracy theorists allege the former president—and the government—are responsible for the 9/11 attacks. There's the frequently mocked argument that "jet fuel can't melt steel beams" which claims the fuel from planes couldn't have melted the World Trade Center structure and so that's why 9/11 was an "inside job." And that's what Smith was trying to mock.
